The garden is separated from the desert by a wall. Church-state relations, freedom of conscience and religious tolerance in the thought of the first Baptists

The project includes translation into English and publication in a recognized scientific publishing house, in open access, of a scientific monograph titled “A garden separated from the desert by a wall. Church-State Relations, Freedom of Conscience and Religious Tolerance in the Thought of the First Baptists”. The subject of the monograph is the political theology of the First Baptists, the most radical wing of the separatist camp during the English Revolution. Baptists, subjected to repression under the rule of the first Stuarts, based on their own ecclesiology presented arguments for universal freedom of worship and religious tolerance, while calling for the separation of state affairs from religious life. The contribution of the First Baptists to advocating religious freedom and tolerance still does not gain sufficient recognition in the eyes of historians of political and legal thought. Heroes of the 17th century. J. Milton and J. Locke remain for us the eternal struggle for tolerance in the British Isles. Meanwhile, the demands of the first Baptists were much more far-reaching. The monograph I have prepared is an attempt to draw the attention of researchers of political and legal thought to the writings of T. Helwys, J. Murton, L. Busher, Ch. Blackwood and S. Richardson. Baptists can also be found among the founders of the Rhode Island and Providence Plantation colony, whose system was based on a social contract that did not rely on Divine Providence, making public authority an exclusively secular tool for promoting the well-being of its subjects, and religious freedom and tolerance the foundation of the political order. Hence, in the monograph, the reader will also find commentary on the writings of R. Williams and J. Clarke, the most outstanding citizens of the first decades of this colony.
